Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Aquatic Safety Specialist to join our team. As a Lifeguard II, you will be responsible for maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. You will create a positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide continuous scanning of the pool and aquatic area.
  • Follow Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301 and enforce safety rules, policies, and guidelines.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  • Use problem-solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and recognize potential dangers or injuries.
  • Maintain effective relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
  • Review emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.

Requirements:

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding, American Safety & Health Institute, or American Red Cross certification.
  • 1-2 years of lifeguard experience preferred.
  • Able to maintain required certification and demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Physical Demands:

  • Tread water for 2 minutes.
  • Swim 250 yards of front crawl.
  • Swim 50 yards of each: front crawl with the head up, breaststroke, breaststroke with the head up, elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest.
  • Perform a feet-first surface-dive in 8 to 10 feet of water and swim underwater for 15 feet.
  • Start in the shallow end, sprint for 60 feet, and perform an arm-over-arm surface dive in 8 to 10 feet.
  • Pick up an object from the bottom of the pool, surface, and tread water for at least one minute with legs only, replace the object, and swim to the end of the pool.
  • Immediately begin CPR on an adult manikin for 2 minutes.
