Counselor (Demonstrator II) - Substance Abuse Treatment

The Counselor (Demonstrator II) at Amity Foundation is responsible for providing group and individual sessions, as well as related rehabilitative treatment services, to substance abuse students in a residential setting. This role requires direct service delivery and related rehabilitative treatment services in a therapeutic community setting.
Key Responsibilities:- Comply with and evaluate comprehensive social, legal, and personal histories of students, interacting with family members, attorneys, probation/parole officers, and other relevant individuals or agencies.
- Observe, record, and evaluate changes in student appearance, behavior, and demeanor, maintaining accurate and timely student records of sensitive nature.
- Prepare reporting and documentation as required by Amity Foundation and contract compliance, protecting student health, safety, welfare, and confidentiality of student records.
- Frequently follow up with students' daily community living progress, ensuring they receive personal necessities and are taught to maintain a clean, inviting, and hospitable living environment.
- Develop and maintain skill in preparing, setting up, hosting Amity community seminars, gatherings, ceremonies, etc.
- Collaborate with the Circle Tree community to define the student's role in the community, acknowledge accomplishments, special events, and teach the vision and values of the community.
- Assist with training and guidance of the Counselor I (Demonstrator I) when needed.
- Conduct shift change turnovers when needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health field and one year of experience in a substance abuse or behavioral health treatment facility, or
- High school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. and a combination of behavioral health education work experience totaling a minimum of two years, or
- Knowledge of therapeutic community processes, methods, and design, including small-group dynamics.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Medical Record, or similar software.
- Experience with the fundamentals of the Therapeutic Teaching Community.
- Understanding of causes, symptoms, and effects of substance abuse.
- Within ninety days of hire, obtain First Aid and CPR certification and pass a physical examination and tuberculosis test from a health professional.
- State accredited Substance Abuse Disorder Treatment (SUDT) certification or equivalent AOD counselor licenses.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to operate general office equipment.
- Demonstrates an understanding of human emotions with a high level of empathy.
- Ability to exercise an amount of empathy and understands the importance of role-reversal.
- Demonstrates skill in patience, active listening, and interest in diverse life stories.
- Good verbal and written communication skills with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people.
- Ability to maintain sensitivity and objectively under pressure generated by association with substance abuse students.
- Demonstrates proper attitudes and techniques and techniques to residential students.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Frequently required to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Frequently sitting and typing for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally required to reach, walk, climb, pull, push, grasp, stretch, stoop.
- Frequently required talk, hear, see, and use repetitive motions.
- Frequently able to communicate verbally and in written form.
- Frequently able to use all types of vision, such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, to complete daily tasks.
- Frequently moves from one work location to another daily.
- Required to wear comfortable and location-appropriate clothes.
- Ability to change direction as priorities shift.
- Ability to thrive in an environment that requires one to adapt to changing circumstances.
- Ability to professionally work under pressure with difficult or temperamental students & faculty.
- Ability to handle mental and emotional stress related to the position.
- Generally, in an indoor office setting.
- Occasionally works in outdoor elements such as heat, precipitation, and wind.
- The noise level in the work environment is moderate but can be loud.
- The temperature in the work environment is usually moderate to cool but can be cold or hot.
- May travel locally as needed.
