POSITION OVERVIEW
The Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist delivers both advanced and basic respiratory care services, which encompass preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care under the directive of a physician for individuals with conditions affecting the cardiopulmonary system. This role emphasizes exceptional performance by consistently delivering high-quality services to patients and their families, while also supporting healthcare teams to enhance the overall patient experience. A deep understanding of patient and family-centered care is essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to the formulation, execution, management, and assessment of a comprehensive care plan for patients requiring respiratory therapy.
- Administers critical procedures, including:
- Emergency resuscitation techniques, such as CPR and airway management (assisting with intubation and suctioning as required).
- Conducts ECGs and arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis.
- Sets up and operates various respiratory devices, including mechanical ventilators and therapeutic gas delivery systems, adhering to prescribed treatment protocols.
- Determines treatment requirements, including therapy type, method, duration, and medication dosages, in accordance with physician orders.
- Monitors patient responses to therapy, including vital signs and blood gas levels, and consults with physicians regarding any adverse reactions.
- Interprets prescriptions and patient data to evaluate conditions effectively.
- Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
- Implements safety protocols and ensures compliance with physician directives.
- Maintains accurate patient records detailing therapy and identification information.
- Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, coordinating repairs as necessary.
- Educates patients and their families on disease management techniques, including breathing exercises and the use of respiratory medications and equipment.
- Serves as a resource for pulmonary assistants.
- Performs assigned administrative tasks as needed.
- Manages inventory and replenishes supplies within the Respiratory Services Department.
- Participates in on-call duties as required.
- Undertakes additional related responsibilities as necessary.
- Maintains professional competency in respiratory care practices.
- Demonstrates alignment with the organization's mission, vision, and values, along with adherence to established standards of behavior.
- Exhibits the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, understanding developmental principles across the lifespan and assessing patient needs accordingly.
QUALIFICATIONS
- EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited respiratory therapy program and successful completion of the national credentialing examination.
- LICENSURE: Must hold a valid license as a Registered Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan.
- EXPERIENCE: BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred.
- KNOWLEDGE: Familiarity with diagnostic and treatment methodologies for cardiopulmonary diseases, including symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures.
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capability to perform CPR, navigate the hospital environment, operate and transport respiratory equipment, and communicate effectively.
- MENTAL ABILITIES: Proficient in assessing patient conditions, teaching necessary skills, and prioritizing care effectively under pressure.
- TECHNICAL SKILLS: Competence in operating respiratory therapy equipment and ECG machines.
- SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Ability to visually assess patient conditions and respond to verbal communications.
- INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Commitment to providing excellent customer service through active listening and effective communication within the healthcare team.
