Job Summary

The Dental Care Specialist will provide dental services to inmate patients, adhering to the security regulations of the assigned institution. This role requires a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine and provide dental care/treatment to referred patients
  • Utilize standard precautions when providing dental care and treatment
  • Evaluate patient dental care required or administered, dental operatory conditions, and equipment in use
  • Make recommendations for dental care not included under basic health care services
  • Function as a consultant to the staff health care provider, if needed
  • Monitor need for dental supplies and equipment
  • Perform routine cleaning, restorative dentistry, and extraction of teeth in accordance with dental policies
  • Take impressions for dental appliances, if indicated, sending prosthesis to outside dental labs
  • Instruct patients in good dental hygiene techniques
  • Ensure progress note documentation is in SOAP format, problem-oriented, legible, and dated, timed, and signed
  • Keep patient information confidential and respect patients' rights to privacy, in accordance with accepted confidentiality practices for incarcerated individuals
  • Provide in-service training for health staff members on appropriate issues such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques
  • Provide input into facility mandatory committees, when requested, such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Infection Control, Quality Improvement, and Medical Audit Committee as requested
Requirements
  • Must obtain and maintain security clearance
  • Must maintain privileges
  • Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations
  • Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations
  • Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details
  • Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis
Work Environment/Travel

This job primarily operates independently in a facility. This job is performed in a correctional facility, client site, or counseling center, including minimum, medium, or maximum security levels. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates, including exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees. This position may require travel depending on specific needs.
