We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Histology Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. As a Histology Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the histology and surgical pathology laboratory with entry-level histology tasks related to specimen processing and routine preparation of surgical and autopsy microscopic slides.
Key Responsibilities- Provide histology laboratory support using automation and manual methods to stain and coverslip microscopic slides, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of slides for pathologists and residents.
- Review protocol files for Gross Only specimens and/or outstanding paperwork, monitoring logs to ensure all routine H&E slides are submitted.
- Perform and document basic embedding procedures for routine surgical and autopsy tissues, prioritizing blocks based on established guidelines.
- Record all documentation consistently and legibly, maintaining manual and electronic records for easy retrieval of data as necessary.
- Answer routine inquiries related to blocks, slides, and case status, directing technical inquiries to the appropriate laboratory staff.
- Clean, disinfect, and perform routine instrument maintenance per SOP, reporting equipment or instrument malfunctions as needed.
- File paraffin blocks on a daily basis, transporting specimens, blocks, and slides as necessary.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, ensuring efficient workflow and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Monitor laboratory inventory in the front histology area, promptly notifying coordinators of any supply issues.
- Foster department and laboratory teamwork through effective communication, participating in Safety and Infection Control activities.
- Assist with orientation and training of new staff in the front histology area, taking initiative for personal development through attending teleconferences and educational sessions.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Computer experience with keyboard proficiency.
- Familiarity with medical terminology.
- A.S. degree in the biological, life sciences, medical laboratory technology, or other related field.
- Prior work experience in laboratory support or health-related experience.
