About the Position

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work as a Licensed Practical Nurse in a residential facility for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As a member of our team, you will provide daily nursing care, training, activities, and treatment to our residents in accordance with all licensing and certification requirements, the South Carolina Nursing Practice Act, and South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Administer routine oral, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications as well as treatments in accordance with nursing protocol, facility policies, and procedures.
  • Monitor health conditions of the individuals and report findings to medical provider and appropriate staff. Assist physician/practitioner with examinations and treatments as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary living and working environment.
  • Ensure accountability and protection from harm for all individuals through appropriate and thorough documentation.
  • Review Monthly Medication Administration Record (MAR) and 90-day recertification orders, complete healthcare records, AIMS/DISCUS, swallowing and SAOM Evaluations. Assist with weights and heights as ordered and indicated by policy and procedures. Properly document as needed.
  • Perform and participate in activities as otherwise assigned by the supervisor to include, but not limited to, participation in on-call rotation procedure.
Requirements
  • Successful completion of a registered nursing education program for professional nursing or an equivalent course of study from a registered nursing education program per Section 40-33-32 of the South Carolina Nurse Licensure Act.
  • Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.
  • Licensure as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina. Some positions require certification in Basic Life Support and/or Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of practical nursing procedures. Knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health, and safety practices. Knowledge of the human anatomy. Ability to maintain attention to detail. Ability to make accurate technical and physical observations of individuals. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain accurate medical documentation. Knowledge of relevant federal and state regulations and laws. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of the healthcare team. Ability to lift and move individuals. General knowledge of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ability to work in a group home like setting or ICF. Physical ability to work with individuals who may be physically aggressive or medically fragile.
About Our Agency

The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) is the state agency that plans, develops, coordinates, and funds services for South Carolinians with the severe, lifelong disabilities of intellectual disability and related disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and similar disability.

Immunization

If this position requires the applicant to work directly with DDSN consumers, a (2) step PPD testing or QuantiFERON TB Gold testing must be completed prior to beginning employment. All new employees who are healthcare providers are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, Varicella and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

State Disaster Plan

In accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DDSN employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.
