Job Overview

Position Title: Grounds Maintenance Assistant

Position Summary: Supports fellow grounds maintenance personnel in executing various outdoor upkeep tasks. Responsible for the installation, repair, and replacement of playground and other fixed outdoor elements. Operates light landscaping machinery and conducts regular cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment used in grounds care. Performs basic fence repairs and assists other departments as needed, which may include routine carpentry and cleaning duties.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conducts both routine and specialized grounds maintenance activities as instructed, which includes but is not limited to: lawn and garden upkeep; mowing and edging; caring for shrubs and ornamental plants; grading yards; preparing and mulching planting areas; planting trees and other vegetation; removing and disposing of plant debris; ensuring proper water drainage; spreading sand in play areas; and managing assigned landscaping projects.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces anchored outdoor items based on work orders; assesses the work site to determine necessary actions.
  • Operates light landscaping equipment, including lawn mowers, hydro-seeders, rotary tillers, and chainsaws.
  • Maintains cleanliness and functionality of grounds maintenance tools and machinery.
  • Performs basic repairs on fences.
  • Assists other departments as required, which may involve basic carpentry and cleaning tasks.
  • May provide support to more experienced grounds maintenance staff in their activities.
  • Completes other related tasks as assigned.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Completion of some high school education is required for basic reading and math skills.
  • Three to five years of experience in grounds maintenance is preferred.
  • Any combination of training, education, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, see, or hear. The employee may occasionally need to stand and walk, and must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
