Behavioral Support Specialist for Autism

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Director of Pupil Personnel, the role involves delivering guidance and training to educational staff working with students who have autism and associated behavioral challenges. This position is designed to enhance the support provided by special education professionals across the district.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

(The following tasks are representative of the type of work performed and are not exhaustive.)
  • Facilitate training and assistance for Special Education personnel in the formulation of Behavioral Support Plans and the implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans and Functional Behavior Assessments.
  • Offer guidance and training to general education instructors on autism awareness and effective positive behavior strategies.
  • Develop and maintain systems for data collection and measurement for students undergoing interventions.
  • Assist in the training of paraprofessionals on the application of behavior management techniques.
  • Provide specialized training and support for Special Education staff in techniques for engaging with children on the Autism Spectrum and in Positive Behavioral Strategies.
  • Participate in Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings for students with autism who exhibit behavioral issues.
  • Compile and present annual data for reporting purposes.
  • Deliver special education case management services as required.
  • Act as a Safety Care Trainer.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Pupil Personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to travel to various educational sites and lift up to 50 pounds.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

Possession of a valid Virginia Teaching License; BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) certification is preferred.

Demonstrated expertise and experience in supporting students on the Autism Spectrum. Proficient in ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) or behavioral interventions. Proven experience in training and supporting educators, staff, and parents. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
