Position Summary

The Electrodiagnostic Specialist is responsible for conducting both routine and advanced neurodiagnostic assessments in accordance with established laboratory standards. This role involves participating in ongoing training to develop expertise in specialized neurodiagnostic techniques while ensuring clinical and professional proficiency tailored to the unique needs of our diverse patient population.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine and advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) assessments, nerve conduction studies (NCV), and evoked potential (EP) evaluations, based on specialized training.
  • Exhibits comprehensive knowledge of equipment operation and calibration protocols, troubleshooting basic equipment malfunctions as necessary.
  • Executes neurodiagnostic procedures utilizing appropriate testing strategies, electrode configurations, and calibration methods.
  • Collects pertinent information from patient medical histories and progress notes, ensuring accurate documentation in the technologist's report.
  • Employs techniques and tools to achieve optimal diagnostic outcomes, informed by medical history and clinical observations.
  • Adheres to professional standards for test recordings as outlined by relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Maintains thorough and precise documentation, including patient history forms and archived data records.
  • Assists in the technical execution of specialized neurodiagnostic procedures, including long-term monitoring and intraoperative neuromonitoring, as appropriate.
  • Responds effectively to medical emergencies, including seizure events, ensuring patient safety.
  • Practices stringent infection control measures throughout all patient interactions.
  • Ensures proper handling and storage of hazardous materials.
  • Provides mentorship and supervision to new technologists and student interns.
  • Participates in the procurement and management of departmental supplies.

Physical Requirements

This role involves working in various patient care settings, including examination rooms and intensive care units. It requires the ability to stand, sit, walk, lift, bend, and maneuver heavy equipment. The Electrodiagnostic Specialist must be capable of lifting at least 10 pounds to shoulder height and effectively communicate in clear, understandable terms. Additionally, the role may involve after-hours call responsibilities.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED is required; completion of an accredited neurodiagnostic program with a preference for candidates possessing three years of relevant experience. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory. EEG registry or eligibility for EEG registry is preferred. Candidates must achieve board eligibility for certification within two years of employment and fulfill ongoing departmental requirements for board preparation within three years. Strong organizational, communication, and conflict resolution skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Familiarity with Good Clinical Practices (GCPs) is advantageous.
