We are currently inviting applications to fill positions for the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office in All Locations.
The established list will be utilized to address both current and future openings within the Sheriff's Office, which encompasses various operations across the county. Applicants must be open to assignments at any location throughout Santa Barbara County. It is essential for applicants to select "All Locations" on the application form.
POSITION: Under general oversight, this role involves learning and executing a range of significant, non-sworn technical and administrative tasks within the Sheriff's Office, including detention facilities, law enforcement operations, and field support for sworn personnel. Duties may involve assisting non-sworn Sheriff's staff, the public, and addressing other operational needs of the Sheriff's Office, along with related responsibilities as necessary.
This entry-level, non-sworn position is designed to equip individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills through practical training and education. Some responsibilities may entail regular interaction with community members, inmates, and potentially challenging individuals; however, unlike sworn personnel, the Sheriff's Service Technician is not expected to engage physically or take enforcement actions. As a non-sworn role, carrying a firearm is neither permitted nor expected. When not engaged in duties at detention or law enforcement facilities, incumbents may perform general clerical and technical tasks, including assisting at public counters, processing payments, managing office supplies, and arranging transportation for vehicles and equipment.

BACKGROUND DISQUALIFIERS:
- An admission of any felony act within the last five years in California or any state classified as a felony in California
- An adult felony conviction in California or an equivalent conviction in another state

1. Assigns, trains, supervises, and manages inmate work assignments in various facilities.
2. Oversees inmate activities during meal times and distribution of personal items.
3. Monitors inmate behavior for compliance with regulations; prepares detailed reports of observations.
4. Operates County vehicles for business-related tasks and inmate transportation.
5. Assists Custody Deputies in maintaining facility security; monitors alarms and communication systems.
6. Manages inventory and distribution of supplies and equipment.
7. Conducts patrols in restricted areas to ensure compliance with parking regulations.
8. Engages with community members to address neighborhood issues and promote crime prevention.
9. Assists sworn personnel at crime scenes and gathers necessary information.
10. Maintains accurate logs and records of activities.
1. Education: High school graduation or equivalent G.E.D. and;
2. Age: Minimum of 18 years old, and;
3. Physical Fitness: Good physical condition with the ability to pass a comprehensive medical examination and job-related physical agility test.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License at the time of appointment.
- During the probationary period, incumbents must successfully complete all training and demonstrate the ability to act with increased independence.
- No prior felony convictions (unless fully pardoned) or being on probation; misdemeanors may disqualify based on type and number; good moral character determined by thorough background check.
Ability to: Remain calm in challenging situations, learn and apply rules and policies, maintain effective working relationships, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Physical Demands: The role requires mobility to work in various settings, including detention facilities and standard office environments. The employee must be able to handle objects, maintain attention for extended periods, and communicate effectively.
Working Conditions: Work occurs in diverse environments, including secured facilities, and may involve exposure to potentially dangerous situations. Willingness to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
Supplemental Information:
Some positions may require a valid California Class B Driver's License. Incumbents must successfully complete a one-year probationary period. Those in positions requiring a Class B license will undergo mandatory drug testing.
Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Basic principles of custody and law enforcement services, interview techniques, and crime prevention practices.
Ability to: Operate law enforcement equipment and respond effectively in emergency situations.
