Position Summary

Library Assistant II, Access Services
Kent Library is a continuous part-time position requiring 30 hours per week (75% FTE) and is eligible for benefits including medical insurance and paid time off. The Access Services team at Kent Library is dedicated to providing exceptional support to students, faculty, staff, and community users. The Library Assistant plays a crucial role in collaborating with team members to deliver outstanding user services, including training and supervising student workers.

The Library Assistant II is tasked with ensuring a safe and secure environment for library users, staff, and collections. Responsibilities include managing the opening and closing of the library, as well as maintaining safety protocols during regular and extended hours. The assistant may be the primary point of contact during adverse weather conditions, ensuring users have access to library services and resources. The expected work schedule includes:
  • Two evenings per week, from 1:30 pm to 11:00 pm (Monday-Thursday)
  • One afternoon/evening shift per week (2:30 pm-8:00 pm)
  • Every other weekend (Saturday 11:30 am-5:00 pm; Sunday 12:30 pm-11:00 pm)
  • Adjustments to the schedule during peak academic periods, including late closing hours
During breaks and holidays, the assistant will maintain a 30-hour work week with a daytime schedule, including some Sunday afternoon hours.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide personalized assistance with information, collections, directions, and other inquiries to users
  • Ensure the safety and security of library users, materials, and facilities
  • Train, supervise, and assess the performance of student employees
  • Manage and update reserves, resource sharing, and interlibrary loan materials
  • Maintain the integrity and security of library user records
  • Assist in the collection and reporting of library statistics
  • Support library collection maintenance efforts
  • Contribute to the development and documentation of Access Services policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with the University’s Department of Public Safety during emergencies
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proven experience in delivering excellent customer service
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel
  • Ability to perform well under pressure in challenging situations
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Availability for evening and weekend shifts during the academic year, as well as daytime hours during breaks
  • Physical ability to navigate the building frequently and lift up to 30 pounds daily, with or without accommodation
