Microbiologist Position at Metropolitan Water Reclamation District

Overview

Under general supervision, this role involves conducting microbiological assessments and research to fulfill regulatory requirements and enhance wastewater treatment processes, ensuring water quality standards and safeguarding public health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adheres to established protocols and procedures, provides training, and executes technical tasks such as routine monitoring for compliance with permits and water quality evaluations.
  • Conducts necessary microbiological analyses and maintains laboratory accreditation.
  • Offers technical assistance across various laboratory sectors.
  • Trains and instructs laboratory personnel.
  • Engages in budget planning and management, equipment upkeep, and preparation of reports.
  • Remains informed about emerging trends in microbial water quality testing.
  • Responds to urgent sample collection requests outside of regular hours.
  • Supervises team members, ensures adherence to policies, conducts performance evaluations, and addresses staff concerns.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Handles data entry, verification, and statistical analysis.
  • Coordinates maintenance of laboratory equipment and may engage in community outreach initiatives.
  • Performs other assigned tasks as necessary.

Work Environment

This position may involve exposure to various chemical and biological substances, fumes, and unpleasant odors, as well as fieldwork.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of environmental microbiology, biochemistry, and applicable regulations.
  • Proficiency in utilizing laboratory instruments and personal computing devices.
  • Capability to supervise personnel and communicate effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related discipline, along with two years of experience in environmental microbiology.

Substitution Policy

Advanced studies in a related academic field may be considered in lieu of the required experience.

Promotional Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related area.
  • One year of experience as a Senior Laboratory Technician.
  • Civil service status in required classifications.
