Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Correctional Officer Trainee to join our team at the Alabama Department of Corrections. As a Correctional Officer Trainee, you will play a critical role in the overall success of our organization by performing correctional work in state prisons. Your primary responsibilities will include overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates, as well as participating in the custody, transport, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in correctional institutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Stand watch in halls or in wall towers to control movement of inmates.
  • Supervise groups of inmates on work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, recreation areas; instruct inmates performing semi-skilled and unskilled manual assignments; check inmates in and out of the institution.
  • Inspect quarters for safety and sanitary conditions and for presence of contraband, search inmates and visitors for contraband.
  • Maintain constant alert and report unusual conditions and disturbances; inspect doors, fences, and other security equipment.
  • Make regular and unscheduled inmate counts and constant checks on those supervised.
  • Complete reports and keep records of work progress, behavior of inmates, infractions of rules of conduct, and unusual occurrences.
  • Drive transfer vehicle and inspect and keep screens and other safety equipment in perfect condition.
  • Explain to inmates rules, procedures, and services available at correctional institutions; assist inmates regarding personal problems, educational and vocational opportunities, and work assignments through day-to-day contacts.
  • Observe inmate behavior and adjustment to a correctional environment; submit evaluation reports.
  • Instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and proper etiquette.
Requirements
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or older.
  • Applicants must provide one of the following during the hiring process: valid certification of having passed the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers or proof of possession of an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
