About the Job:
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Microbiologist II to join our team at the Dept of State Health Services. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in diagnosing rabies cases and ensuring public health safety.
Responsibilities:
Your primary responsibility will be to perform diagnostic tests on specimens submitted for rabies testing using fluorescent antibody techniques with 100% accuracy. This includes preparing slides, staining slides, and interpreting immunofluorescence for definitive diagnosis of rabies. You will also determine if repeat testing is needed and enter results into the laboratory information system.
In addition to your diagnostic work, you will assist in maintaining both the necropsy and general rabies laboratories, including checking in specimens, necropsying heads, removing brains, and dissecting brain material. You will also perform testing on weekends, holidays, and on an emergency basis as necessary, and respond to questions, problems, and emergency requests for rabies testing after routine business hours.
Requirements:
To be successful in this role, you will need a Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution. Laboratory experience identifying viruses using diagnostic methods is preferred, but not required. You must be willing to work hours other than 8am-5pm, including weekends and holidays, and may be required to travel to attend professional meetings.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary for this position is estimated to be around $60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. We offer a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
