Operating Room Technologist

UPMC Shadyside is seeking an Operating Room Technologist to become a part of their Ambulatory Surgery team. This role offers a Monday through Friday schedule with daytime hours, ensuring no holiday, on-call, or weekend shifts.

The department features six operating rooms and boasts a collaborative team environment eager to welcome a new member.

Role Overview:
As an Operating Room Technologist, you will perform a variety of essential tasks that support the surgical team in the operating room.

Your responsibilities will include arranging sterile setups for surgical procedures, passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to surgeons and surgical assistants, preparing sterile supplies, assisting in the cleanup of the operating room, and ensuring the proper placement and functionality of equipment. You will also be tasked with checking and restocking the operating room as needed.

During surgical procedures, you may handle special trays, graft materials, and record patient data.

Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure all medications are correctly labeled and handed to the surgeon in accordance with established policies and procedures.


- Prepare the operating room prior to an operation by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.

- Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, adjusting and checking equipment to confirm it is functioning properly.

- During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to the surgical team.

Assist by holding retractors or instruments, cutting sutures, sponging or suctioning the operative site under the supervision of the surgeon, and helping to count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

- Aid in the preparation, care, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and assist in applying dressings.

- Support the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves.

- After surgery, assist in transferring patients to the recovery room and ensure the operating room is cleaned and restocked.

- Prepare patients for surgery by washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites.

May also transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table, and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.

- Maintain a clean and safe environment through vigilant attention to safety and aseptic techniques.

Continuing Education Requirements:
Compliance with continuing education requirements as specified by the credentialing organization for certification is mandatory.

For individuals not certified, completion of 30 hours of continuing education every two years is required.

Specialty Experience:

Surgical specialties may include, but are not limited to: general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgical settings.

Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nursing staff.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR certification is required based on AHA standards, which include both a didactic and skills demonstration component.

Certification Details - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) must be obtained within six months of program completion.

Note:

New graduates from accredited programs can work for six months prior to certification but must achieve certification within six months of program completion.

A healthcare facility may employ individuals who do not meet certification requirements if they have made diligent efforts to recruit qualified surgical technologists and maintain a written record of those efforts.
