We are currently seeking a skilled Optical Scientist specializing in Wavefront Sensing to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will collaborate with our scientific personnel to implement, investigate, and analyze laboratory-based experiments and engineering challenges. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently while applying technical expertise and judgment to resolve issues that arise during experimental and analytical investigations. The appointee will be responsible for managing their time effectively to ensure project timelines are met, proactively documenting results and findings, and communicating these to the scientific team. Collaboration is key, and the individual may also lead initiatives alongside other engineers and technicians.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute optical breadboard experiments to facilitate instrument development.
  • Conceptualize, analyze, and construct optical systems for measurement applications, from initial design to prototyping.
  • Establish timelines and allocate resources to effectively implement project solutions.
  • Analyze and document findings/results for comprehensive reporting.
  • Engage with technical and administrative staff to troubleshoot and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations for internal stakeholders, conferences, and clients.

Required Qualifications

  • MS/Ph.D. in optical sciences/engineering or a related field, with a minimum of 2 years of experience post-PhD or 4 years post-MS.
  • In-depth knowledge of optics, lens design, and optical systems engineering.
  • Experience with lasers and optical detection systems.
  • Self-motivated individual with a proven ability to quickly grasp new concepts and apply them effectively within established timelines and resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to collaborate towards common organizational goals.
  • Proficiency in LabVIEW and SOLIDWORKS programming.
  • Familiarity with Zemax or similar optical design software.
  • Experience in image processing and software development using C/C++/Python/MATLAB.
  • Expertise in wavefront measurement and analysis, as well as adaptive optics for correcting wavefront aberrations caused by atmospheric and flow turbulence is advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of interferometry and holography is beneficial.
  • Understanding of machine learning and data science principles is a plus.
  • Knowledge of aero-optics effects due to flow compressibility and turbulence is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with fluid mechanics and high-speed aerodynamics is an asset.
