Position Overview:
The Construction Materials Trainee is responsible for sampling and evaluating various construction and maintenance materials to ensure compliance with established specifications. This role operates under moderate supervision.

Daily Responsibilities:
  • Conducts sampling and testing of construction materials, including steel, pipe, paint, asphalt, and cement, to verify conformity to specifications and makes decisions on material approval or rejection.
  • Evaluates fine and coarse aggregate production for quality and gradation compliance at quarries supplying materials for departmental projects, approving or rejecting materials as necessary.
  • Prepares samples for bituminous trial mixes and collaborates with contractors regarding trial mix details.
  • May oversee inspections at plants producing bituminous mixtures to ensure compliance with specifications and approve or reject materials produced.
  • May perform inspections of prestressed or precast concrete and conduct specialized sampling and testing of materials required for federally funded projects.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of test results, production data, and reports on approved materials and aggregates for each project or maintenance task.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications for Success:
  • Enrollment in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program; engineering candidates must be in an ABET-accredited program.
  • Maintaining an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completion of at least 30 credit hours is required.
