Surgical Technologist Job Description

As a Surgical Technologist at Intermountain Healthcare, you will play a vital role in the surgical team, ensuring a safe and successful operative procedure. This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the surgeon during surgery, handling instruments, retracting, and assisting with equipment and draping patients properly.
  • Set up surgical cases according to the surgeon's preference cards.
  • Practice proper sterile technique and report any variations.
  • Assist as a second circulator as necessary.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and perform proper positioning and prepare prepping materials for each physician's preference.
  • Handle anticipated and unanticipated events and crisis situations in a professional manner.
  • Cover call and respond in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and order supplies.
  • Decontaminate equipment, instruments, and supplies and perform terminal cleaning for the operating room to ensure a safe patient environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use proper equipment and instrumentation for specific surgeries.
  • Have all supplies and equipment in the room and report any malfunctioning equipment or unusual conditions of ventilation, plumbing, electrical systems, etc.

Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or obtain certification within one (1) month of employment, required.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Operating Room/Surgical Tech program, required.
  • Current certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • 1 year of OR scrubbing experience is preferred.
  • 1 year of clinical experience in an accredited hospital is preferred.

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
