Job Title: Special Education Assistant I

Job Summary:

The Special Education Assistant I provides instructional support services to students with special needs in various pre-K to 12 and adult special education settings. The incumbent will work under general supervision to assist students with special needs in learning or using special equipment, tests, and instructional media.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communicate regularly with the instructional team regarding daily student performance
  • Assist students with special needs in group or individual settings, accommodating their individual needs
  • Support students with special needs in learning or using special equipment, tests, and instructional media
  • Assist students with special needs in developing and maintaining social behaviors through positive reinforcement techniques, activities, and materials
  • Supervise students with special needs during snack, lunch, and outdoor activities
  • Support students of diverse levels and types of disabilities, gender, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Maintain and prepare records and perform clerical duties related to special education programs

Requirements:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, with one year of experience working with students or completion of one year of college-level coursework in a related field
  • Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination and/or hold appropriate certification for the position
  • Commitment to complete two required training courses or inservices within the first six months of being hired

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of special instructional or communication procedures
  • Ability to apply special instructional or communication procedures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Working Conditions:

The Special Education Assistant I will work in a variety of settings, including classrooms, offices, and outdoor areas. The incumbent will be required to travel from location to location and may be required to lift, push, or pull students with special needs.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is CSEA, Salary Range: Mt. Diablo Unified School District 11/02.
