Position Overview

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is seeking qualified individuals to fulfill roles as teaching specialists or lecturers. These positions are designed to cover courses that cannot be assigned to regular faculty or graduate students.

Appointment Details
Appointments may vary between full-time and part-time, and can be limited to a single semester. This announcement does not represent a direct job vacancy but rather establishes a candidate pool for potential openings during the academic year.

Selected applicants will be drawn from this pool as needed throughout the academic year, with the possibility of renewable appointments based on departmental needs, funding availability, and individual performance.

Teaching Responsibilities
Instructors in the Department are responsible for teaching 1-3 courses each semester. While most assignments will focus on introductory language courses, there may be opportunities to teach literature and culture courses depending on departmental requirements.

Classes may be scheduled during both daytime and evening hours. Responsibilities also encompass course preparation, delivering instruction, grading, holding weekly office hours (including time in the Tutor Lab for first, second, or third-year language courses), administering proficiency assessments, and providing additional administrative support as necessary.

Qualifications
Required:
- A Master's degree in Spanish, Portuguese, or a related field such as Education, Humanities, or Social Sciences for the Teaching Specialist role.
- A Ph.D. in Spanish, Portuguese, or a related field for the Lecturer position.
- For specialized Spanish courses, other relevant professional degrees may be considered (e.g., a Master's in Public Health for Medical Spanish instruction).
- Native or near-native fluency in the language(s) of instruction.
- A minimum of two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the relevant language or related field.
- A demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching and program development.
- Strong communication skills in English.

Preferred:
- Positive feedback from students, peers, and supervisors.
- Prior teaching experience at a similar course level.
- Progressive instructional experience in the specific language of instruction.
- Proven success in teaching, organizing, collaborating, and mentoring students.
