Job Title: Hazmat Decontamination Specialist

As a Hazmat Decontamination Specialist with the U.S. Army, you will play a critical role in protecting the country against the threat of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) weapons of mass destruction. Your primary responsibility will be to decontaminate hazardous material spills or accidents, employing the most advanced equipment and coordinating defense systems against these weapons.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and operate CBRN equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition.
  • Conduct CBRN reconnaissance and surveillance to identify potential threats.
  • Operate decontamination equipment in the event of a disaster, following established protocols.
  • Camouflage reconnaissance and surveillance equipment to prevent detection.
Requirements:
  • Be between the ages of 17– 40.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Submit to background and medical screening.
  • Receive a passing score on the ASVAB.
Training and Development:

To become a Hazmat Decontamination Specialist, you will undergo 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn basic soldiering skills. Following that, you will participate in 9 weeks and 2 days of Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, where you will receive on-the-job instruction and training in CBRN decontamination, defense, detection, and monitoring equipment.

Some of the skills you will learn include:

  • Operation of CBRN decontamination, defense, detection, and monitoring equipment.
  • Preparation for CBRN defense actions and procedures.
  • Use of CBRN protective equipment.
  • Hazardous materials certification at the awareness level.
  • Exposure to toxic agents while wearing CBRN protective equipment.
