Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Utility Distribution Assistant Manager to join our team at Duke University. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing daily work plans, coordinating troubleshooting efforts, developing and executing standard operating procedures, coordinating lockout/tagout (LOTO) activities, and supporting other team initiatives to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Chilled Water, Steam, Hot Water, Domestic Water, Sewer, Reclaimed Water, and Stormwater piped distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Utility Distribution Manager in providing day-to-day assistance to mechanics in analyzing, troubleshooting, and repairing failures in the underground thermal and water distribution systems on the Duke campus.
  • Observe and inspect utility distribution work to ensure the proper use of materials, quality workmanship, and safe work practices.
  • Validate completion of work before restoring equipment to service.
  • Respond to emergency calls concerning equipment or system failures within the utility distribution systems as needed.
  • Troubleshoot problems and facilitate necessary repairs with staff and supporting contractors.
  • Develop and manage Lock-out and Tag-out (LOTO) procedures, including writing and reviewing the procedures, auditing them to ensure compliance with ongoing changes in facilities, and managing the inventory of LOTO tools, parts, and logs.
  • Assist and work with the Planner/Scheduler to develop and manage an effective Preventive and Predictive Maintenance program using Duke's CMMS system.
  • Support department safety initiatives by ensuring the utility distribution team's safety training is up to date and that safety-related issues are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a training and teaching resource for skilled tradespersons as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating utility shutdowns and customer outages when required.
  • Document, manage, and procure consumables and supplies.
  • Ensure that mechanics handle and store hazardous materials properly.
  • Assist the Utilities Maintenance Manager in documenting, implementing, and executing the Maintenance and Reliability workflow process (i.e., planning, scheduling, preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and work execution) to continuously improve maintenance practices.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining key metrics for the maintenance function.
  • Use Duke's CMMS system to report and track compliance with Key Performance Indicators related to maintenance (supplier performance, equipment reliability, overall equipment effectiveness, etc.).
  • Provide feedback to engineering staff to ensure constructability and maintainability are reflected in the design of utility distribution projects.
Requirements
  • 5 years of directly related experience with underground utility distribution systems, including the operation and maintenance of Chilled Water, Steam, Hot Water, Domestic Water, Sewer, Reclaimed Water, and Stormwater distribution systems.
  • An Associate's Degree in a relevant technical field is strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong aptitude for team-based work with a high level of accountability and responsibility.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both in written and oral settings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Duke's CMMS system.
  • Knowledge of utility distribution systems and maintenance practices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks.
Work Environment

The Utility Distribution Assistant Manager will work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, collaborating with a team of skilled tradespersons and engineers to ensure the safe and reliable operation of utility distribution systems. The successful candidate will be required to work in a variety of settings, including outdoors and in confined spaces, and will be expected to lift and move equipment as needed.
