Battelle Memorial Institute is a leading research and development organization, dedicated to delivering innovative solutions for our clients. Our team of experts in spectroscopy is seeking a highly skilled Senior Spectroscopist to join our CBRNE Business Line.

About the Role:

  • Design and conduct experiments using a variety of spectroscopy techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive spectroscopy, near-IR, FTIR, and Raman microscopy.
  • Analyze and interpret data collected from experiments, form conclusions, and write/review technical correspondence and technical reports.
  • Troubleshoot complex laboratory problems and provide new perspectives to challenging problems.
  • Contribute to technology development research to improve existing capabilities.
  • Develop innovative testing and/or analysis methods to improve results and/or the efficiency of the process.
  • Collaborate across job functions and scientific disciplines to adjust analytical approaches accordingly.

Requirements:

  • A PhD degree with 5+ years of spectroscopy experience or a Masters degree with 10+ years of spectroscopy experience.
  • Hands-on experience with FTIR, Raman, fluorescence, XPS, and other traditional and emerging spectroscopy techniques.
  • Experience with common spectroscopy data processing software.
  • Must understand the principles of a broad range of spectroscopy techniques and be able to apply this knowledge to help teams identify appropriate approaches for the identification of trace levels of materials in environmental samples.
  • Proficient in standard wet chemistry and particle picking sample extraction and cleanup techniques.
  • Incumbent must successfully pass medical screening, including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE) and work with highly hazardous materials.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Incumbent will be subject to a government security investigation and must have the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.

Estimated Salary: $80,000 - $110,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, permanent position located in Columbus, Ohio.
