The State of Utah is looking for a qualified Professional Engineer to join our team as a Construction Project Engineer within the Region Four Price Construction Crew.
The construction crew plays a vital role in overseeing and managing construction projects for the Department of Transportation. They ensure that the selected contractor delivers a high-quality outcome within the designated timeframe.
Your responsibilities will encompass monitoring and documenting all phases of the project to ensure compliance with established plans and specifications, managing necessary adjustments in the field due to unforeseen conditions, and evaluating, measuring, and approving completed work.
As a Construction Project Engineer, you will be a crucial member of this team.Some of your key tasks will include:
- Supporting the Resident Engineer in managing personnel, project timelines, budgets, reporting, risks, and crew resources.
- Spending substantial time on-site to gain insight into multiple projects concurrently.
- Providing engineering support and problem-solving expertise throughout the construction process.
- Designing and developing engineering initiatives, as well as preparing engineering and design documentation, including the creation and/or review of CADD drawings and written specifications.
- Reviewing product submissions for technical compliance.- Developing intricate estimates, drafting technical reports and analyses, and conducting research for formal contract modifications (change orders).
- Assisting in training field staff to effectively inspect and enforce contract stipulations, including the review of field documentation and calculations for accuracy and completeness.
- Participating in material testing, interpreting and analyzing test results, and calculating incentives or penalties based on those results.- Collaborating directly with stakeholders, including municipalities, utility owners, and the general public affected by the projects.
- Independently managing smaller projects.
- Overseeing construction contracts.
- Working collaboratively to achieve quality, scope, schedule, budget, and safety objectives on assigned projects.
- Cultivating the knowledge and skills necessary for advancement within the Department.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this role will possess:
- An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah, in accordance with state regulations.
- Previous experience in managing heavy civil construction projects and reviewing plans for feasibility.
- Proficiency in CADD software (Microstation) and 3-D modeling.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively.
- A solid understanding of contract law.
- Experience in public and contractor interactions.
- A comprehensive understanding of the UDOT partnering process and a proven ability to foster positive relationships.
- Exceptional skills in identifying and resolving complex issues.
- Self-motivation and a desire to learn.
- The capability to mentor, train, and lead others.
- Strong organizational skills.
Preference may be given to candidates with prior experience in managing heavy civil construction projects, particularly in construction or materials.
This position may also be filled at the Engineer II level for candidates without a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah.

The physical demands of this position are moderate. Work may require physical exertion, including standing, walking over uneven surfaces, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) regularly and/or for extended periods.
