Position Title:
School Safety Coordinator

Purpose of the Role:

The role of the School Safety Coordinator is essential for identifying potential issues related to the welfare, safety, and security of students, staff, visitors, and the school environment. This position is responsible for maintaining a secure atmosphere by enforcing disciplinary policies and regulations, as well as effectively communicating information in response to inquiries.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Apprehends individuals suspected of illegal activities to hold them for school administrators or law enforcement.
  • Monitors pedestrian and vehicle traffic to ensure the safety of students and staff.
  • Educates students, parents, and staff about laws, enforcement procedures, and the consequences of their actions.
  • Collaborates with external agencies (e.g., law enforcement, community professionals) to share and receive information regarding safety concerns within the school environment.
  • Investigates potential campus incidents and student-related community issues to resolve conflicts and pursue necessary actions.
  • Oversees school events and facilities (e.g., pep rallies, lunch breaks, parking areas) to provide visible authority and ensure student safety, maintain security, and deter criminal activity.
  • Prepares documentation to provide written support and convey information effectively.
  • Responds to emergencies (e.g., fights, accidents) to ensure the safety of students, staff, and property.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the workload of others to maximize workforce efficiency and meet operational needs.
  • Participates in various activities (e.g., meetings, training) to exchange and receive information.
  • Assists law enforcement in their duties to support the completion of their tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Required Skills:

Ability to intervene appropriately in emergencies or critical situations, de-escalate volatile situations, and communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms with students and the public.


Knowledge of district policies and practices regarding discipline.

Ability to walk for extended periods, comprehend and execute oral and written instructions, maintain a firm yet courteous demeanor, and keep accurate written records.

Significant physical abilities include effective communication, visual acuity, and depth perception.

Valid Driver's License and proof of insurability, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance

Comments and Additional Information:

This position requires 3.75 hours of work per day, for a total of 182 days each year.

Anticipated Locations: Multiple vacancies available across various high schools within the district.

New employees to the District may receive credit for up to two years of previous experience, with a maximum entry placement at step three on the salary schedule.
