Position Summary:

The Lead Procurement Specialist is responsible for overseeing designated categories of raw materials, fabricated components, and various goods and services. This role encompasses Supplier Relations, Contract Negotiation, Cost Savings Initiatives, and Continuous Quality Improvement. The specialist will collaborate proactively with Sales and other departments to fulfill customer requirements.

The position involves developing purchasing and customer service strategies that align with customer/supplier partnerships, Just In Time (JIT) delivery, quality standards, and financial performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough research and qualification of new supplier sources to secure enhanced pricing, delivery, quality, and service for BTD's raw materials and services.
  • Stay informed about relevant market trends and conditions to anticipate potential impacts on pricing, availability, or quality of procured products.
  • Procure assigned items from qualified sources, including the interpretation and negotiation of favorable terms and conditions.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchase orders, quotations, and quality in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Actively solicit and prepare quotations, evaluate submissions, and select suppliers that provide the best value for the company.
  • Review and interpret purchase requests generated through the ERP/MRP Manufacturing system.
  • Address and resolve any discrepancies related to issued or negotiated purchase orders.
  • Coordinate supplier visits, both on-site and off-site, while fostering transparent and honest business relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Participate in the creation and implementation of systems to measure, track, and analyze supplier and material effectiveness, including delivery performance, pricing, and product quality.
  • Generate Supplier Performance Reports and conduct semi-annual Supplier Performance Reviews.
  • Carry out on-site supplier evaluations and quality audits to ensure compliance with industry standards and BTD's expectations.
  • Issue Supplier Corrective Action Reports and Nonconformance Debit Memos as necessary, following up on corrective actions as per departmental processes.
  • Mentor junior buyers in areas such as Supplier Qualification and Development, Continuous Quality Improvement, Cost Savings Initiatives, and Advanced Purchasing Practices.

Qualifications and Skills:
We seek a candidate with a background in the Steel Industry.

A high school diploma along with a minimum of two years of post-secondary education focused on purchasing, or a four-year degree, or five years of relevant work experience in Purchasing is required.


Experience and Skills Required:
At least three years of recent purchasing experience in a manufacturing context, encompassing the following skills and abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing industry purchasing MRP/ERP systems, supply chain management, contract administration, negotiation, and inventory control.
  • Experience in the Steel sector, whether with a mill, service center, or manufacturing.
  • Understanding of general accounting principles, production control, quality assurance, and logistics management.
  • Strong grasp of product costing, internal accounting controls, and financial analysis of revenues and expenditures.
  • Familiarity with engineering and manufacturing processes as they pertain to purchasing, including basic blueprint interpretation.
  • Ability to organize, direct, and coordinate manufacturing purchasing initiatives.
  • Capacity to build and maintain robust working relationships with suppliers, internal stakeholders, and colleagues, effectively communicating ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Capability to coach designated personnel, enhancing their skills to operate at the Senior Buyer level.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating general office equipment and related purchasing software on a microcomputer.
