Job Title: Adult Education Intern

About the Role:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to support our adult education program in northern New Jersey. As an Adult Education Intern, you will play a vital role in assisting our staff to meet the educational needs of adult refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with on-site intake procedures and virtual enrollment processes.
  • Support the administration of pre-test and post-test assessments using standardized and non-standardized tests.
  • Grade and document telephonic or onsite pre- and post-term placement tests.
  • Assist instructors and learners with daily classroom issues, including attendance, technical support, and scheduling.
  • Keep track of client communication and follow up on attendance.
  • Support clients to enroll in other adult education programs with community providers.
  • Use interpretation lines as needed to answer learners' inquiries.
  • Compile data, perform data entry, filing, and assemble information for comprehensive reports in internal databases and Microsoft spreadsheets.
  • Contact clients to conduct course feedback surveys.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain knowledge about refugee resettlement and refugee social services.
  • Develop administrative, digital literacy, and presentation skills.
  • Learn how to interact with multicultural and limited English-speaking clients.

Requirements:

  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate or degree is strongly preferred.
  • Undergraduate studies in education, humanities, social sciences, international relations, or a related field.
  • Must convey confidence, have effective communication skills, and exhibit excellent attention to detail.
  • Desired languages: Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Pashto, or Kiswahili.
  • Strong desire to help refugees rebuild their lives in New Jersey.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Patience, understanding, flexibility, and an unceasingly positive attitude.
  • Willingness to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
  • Willingness to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
