Job Summary:
The NC Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled and customer-focused Driver License Examiner I to join our team. As a Driver License Examiner I, you will be responsible for administering eligibility tests, evaluating applicants for classified Driver Licenses, Commercial Driver Licenses, Learner's permits, and ID cards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Administer eligibility tests and evaluate applicants for Driver Licenses, Commercial Driver Licenses, Learner's permits, and ID cards.
- Use first-class customer service skills to confirm applicants' knowledge of NC Motor Vehicle laws, identify road signs, check vision, and observe/evaluate driving skills by riding with applicants in their personal vehicles on a road test in all types of weather.
- Serve as a public advisor to identify any possible health concerns with drivers, advise customers of adjunct service programs available, and ensure applicant data and court-ordered information is entered accurately into internal systems for reporting.
- Ensure we meet our mission of providing excellent customer service by reducing wait times and improving customer satisfaction.
- Flexibility to travel during the day and overnight on short notice may be required.
Requirements:
- Graduation from high school and the demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills, and abilities gained through at least two years of clerical, administrative, or paraprofessional experience involving the resolution of varied public contact situations, including interviewing and/or explaining information of considerable detail.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver License with no suspensions or revocations within the past 10 years in any state for any motor vehicle-related offense and no more than 5 active points.
- Ability to meet all federal medical requirements and qualify/retain a Commercial Driver License.
- Willingness to submit to a criminal history record check and a motor vehicle record check.
- Availability to attend 7 weeks of certification training requiring overnight stay Monday-Friday.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience explaining policy, procedure, and/or laws to educate customers or the public.
- Customer service experience with a diverse clientele.
- Knowledge of basic computer software, including database programs, Microsoft Office applications, and the ability to quickly adapt to internal systems.
- Experience in evaluation of information or documents to make determinations for actions.
- Experience working as a collaborative team player using problem-solving skills to work out solutions for delivery.
- Experience composing written communication using typing skills.
