Position Overview:
The Clinical Support Specialist is responsible for delivering professional medical assistance to patients undergoing evaluations and treatments in an outpatient healthcare environment, under the guidance of the supervising healthcare provider and office management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluates the overall health status of patients, including taking vital signs and recording weight.
- Aids the healthcare provider during examinations, diagnostic tests, and therapeutic procedures, which may include blood draws, injections (with an emphasis on dosage calculations), suturing, and various standard office practices.
- Administers medications to patients according to provider directives and established protocols, ensuring correct dosage, administration route, site, and thorough documentation.
- Trains and orients new staff members as necessary.
- Provides essential patient care as prescribed.
- Ensures timely receipt and communication of test results to patients.
- Upholds patient comfort and confidentiality by employing effective communication techniques.
- Records all clinical interventions, patient and family feedback, medications given or prescribed, etc., in the patient's medical record.
- Encourages health and wellness by supplying educational materials and conveying the provider's recommendations and instructions.
- Consults with the healthcare provider regarding patient inquiries and the urgency of appointments.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of medical supplies and ensures all equipment is in good working order.
- Monitors the accuracy of patient medical records and maintains all necessary reports and statistics.
- Safeguards confidentiality regarding the practice, its patients, and staff.
- Proficiently operates various office and medical equipment, including but not limited to telephones, computers, fax machines, stethoscopes, EKG machines, and basic laboratory tools.
- Keeps the work area clean and sanitary.
- Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and sanitized.
- Facilitates referrals and pre-certifications as required.
- May assist in scheduling patient appointments as directed by the provider and accurately communicate this information to patients.
- Receives calls from healthcare facilities and relays pertinent information to the healthcare provider promptly.
- Collaborates with patients, physicians, and other members of the care team to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Adheres to established policies, procedures, and safety standards, completing required educational assignments annually, and participates in quality improvement initiatives as needed.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum Education:
No specific educational requirements; however, must meet the criteria for obtaining the necessary certification and/or licensure as mandated by the relevant authority.
Minimum Experience:
A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a certified Medical Assistant from a recognized certifying body is required.
Licensure Requirement:
Certification as a Medical Assistant from a recognized certifying organization is mandatory. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is also required.
