Position Summary
The Surgical Technician plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality preoperative patient care by utilizing specialized equipment and instruments. This position serves as a scrub assistant to the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Surgical Technician is expected to demonstrate expertise and serve as a resource for fellow staff members.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a resource specialist for a designated operating room area or specialty service, supporting unit goals and facilitating operations.- Maintain a sterile environment throughout all surgical procedures.
- Exhibit proficiency in aseptic techniques and advanced surgical practices, ensuring optimal patient care across various scenarios.
- Confirm the availability and functionality of supplies, instruments, and equipment before surgical procedures, adhering to established protocols.
- Provide safe patient care in compliance with policies, procedures, and standards, while managing resources effectively.
- Encourage professional development by fulfilling educational requirements and supporting departmental objectives; serve as a mentor to less experienced staff.
- Assist the surgical team with scrubbing in, passing instruments, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon during procedures.
- Ensure proper handling of specimens and instruments post-surgery, maintaining accurate counts.
- Inspect and report on the condition of equipment and supplies, ensuring readiness for use.
- Organize and restock the operating room and related areas between cases.
- Label and supply all fluids and medications utilized during procedures.
- Assist with patient transport as necessary.
- Be available for on-call duties and flexible scheduling as required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

- Adhere to safety regulations and infection control policies, including emergency preparedness and hazardous materials management.
Performance Improvement
- Engage in performance improvement initiatives as needed.

- Maintain confidentiality regarding patient information, complying with HIPAA regulations.

- Utilize clear communication methods to explain procedures and care, being mindful of potential language barriers.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a Surgical Technologist Program and current certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- 2-3 years of experience as a surgical technologist with demonstrated competence in multiple surgical specialties.
- Clinical competency across specialty areas as determined by facility needs.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
- Basic mathematical skills for calculations.
- Common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.
- Basic computer proficiency.
Certificates and Licenses
- BLS certification.
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform tasks requiring vision, hearing, and repetitive motion.
- Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Regular standing and walking, with occasional sitting and reaching.
Work Environment
