Orientation and Mobility Specialist

As an Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you will play a critical role in helping students develop the skills they need to navigate their surroundings safely and independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess individual student needs and develop personalized plans to achieve maximum safe travel potential and functional independence.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide individualized educational and pre-vocational programs for students.
  • Design and implement programs to support students' individual education plans (IEPs) and evaluate progress.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and colleagues to ensure continuity of services.
  • Supervise students and, on occasion, supervise Teaching Assistants or interns.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university and eligibility for ACVREP Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor.
  • Masters degree preferred with two years experience teaching students with visual impairments who may also have additional disabilities.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to drive school vehicles, including chair cars.
  • Ability to think clearly in stressful situations and possess high stress tolerance and physical stamina.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Eligible for ACVREP Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor.
  • First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification required.
