Position Overview

As a participant in the Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program, you will take on the role of a registered apprentice, gaining hands-on experience as a wildland firefighter trainee. This entry-level position involves working within a wildland fire crew or module, engaging in various fire management tasks including preparedness, fuels management, prevention, and suppression activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a registered apprentice, developing skills as a wildland firefighter trainee.
  • Engage in firefighting efforts under extreme heat conditions.
  • Operate pump engines, manage pump adjustments, and utilize hoses and nozzles effectively.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on firefighting equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and prepare hoses for firefighting operations.
  • Utilize chainsaws for fire line construction and perform basic maintenance on the equipment.
  • Participate in various training assignments, including trail maintenance and fire lookout duties.
  • Analyze weather data, topography, and fuel types to inform firefighting strategies.
  • Manage specialized equipment essential for wildland and prescribed fire responses.
  • Participate in one or more fire module types, including hand crews, helitack, or engine crews.

Employment Type

This is a Full-Time, Career Seasonal position. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent and provide similar benefits to Career appointments, but do not guarantee year-round work. The selected candidate will be assured of at least 6 months of work per year, with the specific schedule determined upon appointment.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Background investigation and favorable adjudication are required.
  • Must meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • A High School diploma or GED is required.
  • Participation in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program is necessary.
  • Completion of a drug test with a negative result is required prior to appointment.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary for potential vehicle operation.
  • Physical fitness assessments and medical examinations will be conducted.
