About The Unit
The Bone Marrow Transplant unit is dedicated to delivering exceptional stem cell transplants, having successfully completed over 7,000 procedures. Stem cells are crucial in treating various hematological malignancies, including leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and germ cell tumors. Our patients undergo intensive chemotherapy to eliminate their immune systems, after which healthy stem cells are administered, sourced either from the patient or a donor.
We frequently conduct CAR-T cell therapy, a specialized immunotherapy that harnesses components of the immune system (T-cells) that are cultivated in a controlled environment and reinfused into the patient. We are proud to be among the select few centers in the United States authorized to provide all FDA-approved CAR-T cell therapies.
Patients receiving stem cell transplants and CAR-T cell therapies remain with us until their new, healthy immune cells develop. We also administer chemotherapy regimens tailored to patients during their treatment for various hematological cancers. To enhance cancer treatment knowledge, we provide clinical trial regimens and supportive care throughout all stages of the patient's cancer journey.
Job Responsibilities:
- A clinician who effectively utilizes acquired knowledge, theoretical frameworks, research, and practical experience to adapt to evolving clinical scenarios.
- Acts as a resource for colleagues and a staunch advocate for patients and their families. Maintains effective and respectful communication with patients, their families, and the healthcare team.
- Provides safe, reliable, and efficient care to a diverse patient population independently, employing the nursing process. Demonstrates advanced assessment skills and understands the influence of nursing care on patient outcomes. Accurately documents nursing interventions and results in the designated format.
- Independently plans and implements patient care, incorporating patient and family input and objectives into the care plan. Evaluates patient responses to care and modifies the plan as necessary. Identifies educational needs of patients and families, recommending resources to address those needs.
- Manages time effectively and recognizes the roles of the interdisciplinary team, patients, and family care partners, utilizing them as resources in patient care planning.
- Utilizes resources responsibly with an emphasis on cost containment.
- Exhibits strong listening skills and works to eliminate barriers to communication. Employs effective conflict resolution strategies and tailors care based on knowledge of the patient and family. Acknowledges personal values and their impact on interactions and relationships.
- Understands the importance of cultural differences in developing relationships with patients and families, focusing on identifying cultural norms. Develops and implements action plans for non-routine situations, seeking assistance when necessary to resolve complex issues.
- Maintains confidentiality and takes personal responsibility for professional development and growth. Engages with the unit to identify and address discipline-specific challenges and needs.
- Reviews and assesses the effectiveness of patient care documentation, utilizing interviews, surveys, focus groups, and questionnaires to identify and address areas for improvement.
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program with at least 12 months of recent nursing experience. All nurses in roles requiring an unencumbered nursing license must possess a valid, active license or temporary permit approved by the Georgia Licensing Board. BLS certification is required, and ACLS may be necessary in designated departments.
