Optician - Vision Institute Optical Shop Specialist

UPMC University of Pittsburgh Physicians is seeking a skilled Optician to work at the Vision Institute Optical Shop. This full-time position involves working Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

This is a floater position, requiring travel between multiple locations, including Oakland, Shadyside, Wexford, Natrona Heights, and Children's Hospital.

The ideal candidate will be part of a great teamwork environment dedicated to patients and their business. Vision insurance knowledge is preferred.

Purpose:

Responsible for fitting eyeglasses frames and selecting lenses for spectacles that meet the patient's cosmetic, vocational, and lifestyle needs.

Finishing and edging lenses to fit patient frames.

Responsibilities:

Knowledge of different lens brands and materials, as well as a willingness to stay current with new lens technologies, is required.

Measure customers' eyes, including pupillary and vertex distance, and make all necessary measurements for bifocals, trifocals, or progressive addition lenses.

Frame adjustments using specialized instruments.

Verify that lenses have been ground to specifications after glasses are made.

Use a lensometer to verify prescriptions and edge lenses.

Instruct patients in adapting to, wearing of, and caring for eyewear.

Process necessary paperwork for vision-specific carriers and accept payments for materials as needed.

Maintain patient optical records.

Answer phone inquiries.

Prepare work orders for the ophthalmic lab, including information on lens prescriptions, lens sizes and types, material, frame information, pupillary distance, and vertex distance.

Follow rules and regulations regarding dispensing laws and office policies and procedures.

Edge and finish lenses according to specifications provided by the prescribing doctor.

Recommend eyeglass frames, lenses, lens coatings, and ancillary products after considering the prescription and customer's needs and facial features.

High school graduate and minimum 3 years of experience working as an optician are required.

Optician license is preferred.
