Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts sophisticated cardiac ultrasound examinations, including M-mode, 2-D, Doppler, and Color Flow Doppler, utilizing diverse equipment and methodologies to ensure precise measurements for accurate and high-quality diagnostic outcomes.
  • Recognizes and characterizes cardiac irregularities, adjusting the examination scope as necessary, and correlating both invasive and non-invasive cardiac diagnostic results with anatomical and functional cardiac data.
  • Prepares patients for ultrasound procedures, gathering comprehensive clinical histories, including relevant cardiac findings and laboratory results, to tailor imaging techniques for thorough and diagnostic echocardiograms.
  • Assists cardiologists in performing transesophageal echocardiograms, ensuring proper calculations and maintaining sterile conditions for equipment.
  • Effectively communicates clinical observations to relevant medical personnel.
  • Maintains accurate records and performs routine upkeep of the Echocardiography Lab and its apparatus, promptly reporting any equipment issues.
  • Serves as a knowledgeable resource for colleagues, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, and procedures to enhance patient care.
  • Collaborates with supervisors to implement protocols in line with evolving technologies, ensuring adherence to echocardiography standards.
  • Partners with the medical director to establish and uphold quality assurance processes and protocols, conducting regular reviews and assisting with accreditation efforts to meet established standards.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide age-appropriate care, understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan, and accurately assessing patient data to identify individual needs.

Licensure and Certification Requirements:

  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) with Adult Echo credentials from ARDMS, or
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) certification from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association (AHA) to be obtained within six months unless exempted by department leadership.

Educational Background:

  • Completion of an accredited or approved Sonography program beyond high school.

Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in cardiovascular sonography, including digital quantification experience.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced understanding and capability to apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation, and techniques, along with new computer methods for the analysis of echocardiographic data.
  • Proficient in cardiovascular sonography procedures, including transesophageal and congenital techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to patient service.
  • Intermediate proficiency in computer applications.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Operates all necessary equipment to fulfill job responsibilities.
  • Ability to sit for 50% and stand/walk for 20% of the workday.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist and up to 20 lbs. overhead.
  • Ability to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance and push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance and frequently push or pull over 100 lbs.
  • Requires functional use of hands and feet for equipment operation, along with adequate speech, vision, and hearing capabilities.
  • Protective clothing may be required, and exposure to mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards is possible.
