Job Summary

The County of Orange is seeking a highly skilled Public Health Microbiologist II to join our team. As a key member of our Public Health Laboratory, you will be responsible for performing complex microbiological testing in areas such as bacteriology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, virology, and water quality. Your expertise will be crucial in maintaining the quality of testing that our laboratory provides to various clients and programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct technical laboratory testing and analysis of a standardized and generally recurring nature using well-defined procedures.
  • Evaluate, validate, and/or verify new laboratory testing methods.
  • Work with laboratory instruments and equipment, including calibration and troubleshooting.
  • Act as a technical expert for assigned areas and provide consultation to clients.
  • Train, review, and oversee the work of Public Health Microbiologist I(s), Laboratory Assistants, or Public Health Microbiologist Trainees.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Medical or Public Health Microbiology or an equivalent major as approved by the California State Department of Health.
  • Valid Public Health Microbiologist certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience performing the duties of a Public Health Microbiologist in an official public health laboratory.
  • Experience working with laboratory instruments, including microscopes, centrifuges, biosafety cabinets, PCR instruments, and extraction platforms.
  • Experience working with Laboratory Information Systems, such as Cerner, STARLIMS, Apollo, SunQuest, Orchard, EPIC, and Beaker.
