Job Title: Registered Nurse

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs work in accordance with professional practices, special orders from doctors, and established rules and regulations. General assignments are usually received from a professional supervisor responsible for assigning and supervising the work of the professional nursing staff. The incumbent is expected to perform these duties without detailed instructions. Supervision may be exercised over Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provides nursing care to patients in the Jails, including responding to emergencies, first aid, and CPR during emergency response;
  • Assists providers with examinations, special procedures, and/or specialized therapeutic treatments;
  • Accepts orders from practitioners, including called-in orders; Gives medication, immunizations, and nursing treatment as prescribed by a physician, and notes reactions of patients to medications and treatments;
  • Supervises the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel;
  • Makes rounds of housing areas, checks patients, nursing stations, and supplies;
  • Obtains medical history of patients and screens for numerous biopsychosocial needs and/or problems, such as substance abuse, tuberculosis, and infectious diseases;
  • Performs care for wounds, administers medications, gives injections, and assesses patients;
  • Counsels and educates patients regarding their health and provider's orders and the need for further diagnostic tests, and completes referrals to specialists and/or ancillary support services;
  • May serve as a member of various health center committees, such as quality assurance and infection control;
  • Writes reports, keeps statistics, and maintains charts and spreadsheets on the condition and progress of patients;
  • Tracks patients with specific conditions or treatments, such as MAT, diabetes, HIV, etc.
Requirements:
  • Possession of a license, and a current registration, issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse, or possession of a limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse;
  • Candidates must possess, or, for those with limited permits, obtain within one year, a current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of New York, and must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title;
  • Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State;
  • Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practice;
  • Good knowledge of medical procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene, and dietetics;
  • Skill in the application of professional nursing techniques and practices;
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions of a technical and professional nature in exact detail and to administer therapeutic treatments prescribed by a physician;
  • Ability to recognize and interpret symptoms and make assessments;
  • Ability to instruct subordinates and other people in basic nursing care;
  • Ability to deal with each patient sympathetically and tactfully, while at the same time carry out the treatment prescribed for them;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position;
  • Must be punctual, professional, and dress appropriately.

Employees continue to earn vacation days in accordance with the schedule, reaching a maximum of 30 days per year. Unused vacation time rolls over each year until a maximum of 420 hours;
  • Sick Time: Earned at the rate of 1/2 day per pay period totaling 13 days annually. Unused sick time rolls over each year, with no maximum rollover;
  • Personal Leave: An employee granted 4 days of personnel leave each year. Employees receive 7.5 hours on their 1st day and will accrue one additional day every quarter. After employee first anniversary, 28 hours of personal days will be frontloaded at the beginning of each year worked. Unused personal time rolls over into sick each year with no maximum rollover;
  • Salary: Step increase every 12 months on July 1 completed year of service in addition to contractual raises through 2024;
  • Membership in the New York State Retirement Pension System 5 year vested. In order to retire with Health benefits you need to work 10 continuous years with the county and be 55;
