Job Overview:

This role is essential for maintaining a secure and effective transportation network for the public, while ensuring courteous and efficient service. Note: Assignments will be based on the experience and qualifications outlined below.

Entry-Level Highway Operations Worker: $ Grade 14

The Entry-Level Highway Operations Worker serves as the foundational position within the Highway Operations Technician series. Responsibilities include the operation of vehicles and machinery, pavement maintenance, landscape upkeep, roadside restoration, signage and striping, equipment delivery, environmental compliance, and vehicle maintenance.

Highway Operations Technician 1: $ Grade 17

The Highway Operations Technician 1 position is designed for apprentices. Training will cover advanced tasks such as vehicle operation, pavement maintenance, landscape care, roadside repairs, signage and striping, equipment delivery, environmental compliance, and vehicle upkeep.

Highway Operations Technician 2: $ Grade 18

The Highway Operations Technician 2 role is the initial journey classification. Responsibilities include a wide range of intermediate highway operational tasks and potential leadership duties. Key tasks involve vehicle operation, pavement maintenance, landscape care, roadside repairs, signage and striping, equipment delivery, environmental compliance, and vehicle maintenance.

This position also includes scheduling, assigning, and supervising the work of others, inspecting completed tasks, and providing training and guidance to staff.

Highway Operations Technician 3: $ Grade 19

The Highway Operations Technician 3 is the full journey classification, responsible for a comprehensive range of high-level highway operational duties and supervisory responsibilities. Key tasks include vehicle operation, pavement maintenance, landscape care, roadside repairs, signage and striping, equipment delivery, environmental compliance, and vehicle maintenance.

This role also encompasses scheduling, assigning, and overseeing the work of subordinates, inspecting completed work, and training staff in the aforementioned duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Entry-Level Highway Operations Worker:

Preferred candidates will possess at least 6 months of relevant experience in roadway/highway operations, which may include vehicle operation, heavy equipment maintenance, roadway signing/striping, pavement maintenance, tunnel upkeep, or landscape care.

Highway Operations Technician 1:

Candidates must have a minimum of 1 year of relevant roadway/highway experience, which may include vehicle operation, heavy equipment maintenance, roadway signing/striping, pavement maintenance, tunnel upkeep, or landscape care.

Highway Operations Technician 2:

Candidates must have at least 2 years of relevant roadway/highway experience, which may include vehicle operation, heavy equipment maintenance, roadway signing/striping, pavement maintenance, tunnel upkeep, or landscape care.

Highway Operations Technician 3:

Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of relevant roadway/highway experience, which may include vehicle operation, heavy equipment maintenance, roadway signing/striping, pavement maintenance, tunnel upkeep, or landscape care.

Selective Preference(s):
Entry-Level Highway Operations Worker Requirements:

Employees must obtain their Arizona CDL (Class "A") permit within 90 days of hire and a valid Arizona Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for manual transmission within 6 months of hire.

Highway Operations Technician 1-3 Requirements:

An Arizona Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for manual or automatic transmission and a (N) tanker endorsement is required prior to starting the position. Additional endorsements may be necessary based on assigned duties.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is mandatory for all CDL holders. Selected candidates will be required to register and authorize the agency to conduct limited queries on their CDL throughout their employment.

Candidates must be able to respond to emergency call-outs (24/7) and reach the maintenance yard within 30 minutes.

The position may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic conditions.

The role requires the ability to lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 lbs.

Employees operating a vehicle for state business must maintain a valid, unexpired driver's license and meet all necessary training and record check requirements.

All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
