We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Shipyard Firewatcher. This laborer position is responsible for observing for sparks and flames during welding and assisting trades in maintaining a safe work environment.

Job Description

This role requires a high school graduate or GED with prior experience preferred. The ability to read and write, understand verbal instructions, and possess observation skills, good judgment, and ongoing safety awareness is essential.

  • Assists in setting up equipment, including helping the welder run leads, hoses, operation of air and electric power tools; moves metal pieces for re-fitting; removes scrap from the work area.
  • Moves fire bottle to areas of work; observes for sparks from welding and grinding; extinguishes fire when necessary.
  • Maintains a clean, hazard-free work area.
  • Sorts, inspects, and stacks lumber and metal scaffold components.
Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Standing, walking, climbing/balancing, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crawling, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, fingering, eye/hand/foot coordination, seeing, hearing, and speaking.
  • Understanding written and verbal directions, recognizing and avoiding potential safety hazards, and following established procedures.
Working Conditions

This role requires working 50% of the time inside and 50% outside on board ship, drydock, balanced on scaffolding in the shipyard. The individual must be exposed to wind, heat, constant wet and humid conditions, and vibrations; works near constantly moving machinery, mechanical parts, and traffic from other trades.

Compensation

The estimated salary for this position is $45,000-$55,000 per year, depending on experience.
