Position Overview & Responsibilities
  • Specialty: Operating Room Specialist

Preparation for Surgical Procedures:

* Utilizes established procedure preference lists
* Selects and organizes necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical interventions
* Maintains a sterile environment for operations

Assisting the Surgical Team:

* Aids surgeons by executing delegated tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse
* Acts as the primary scrub person
* Responsible for passing instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, drains, and dressings
* Conducts sponge, needle, and instrument counts as per established protocols
* Ensures the proper handling of specimens until they are transferred to a Registered Nurse

Patient Safety Advocate:

* Safeguards patients from potential harm and maintains the integrity of the sterile field

Communication and Record Maintenance:

* Restocks and organizes supplies
* Prepares the operating room for subsequent procedures
* Must be available for primary call duties as assigned

Professional Development:

* Participates in mandatory in-services, annual reviews, and educational programs

Regulatory Compliance:

* Adheres to standards of care and policies established by North Mississippi Medical Center

Qualifications:

* High School diploma or equivalent required
* Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or equivalent on-the-job training with two years of experience in an operating room setting
* Certification as a Surgical Technologist is preferred
* Current American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification at the Healthcare Provider level required
* Orientation and training period of three to six months based on experience
* Orientation includes exposure to various surgical specialties
* Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential
* Experience interacting with a diverse patient population, including neonates to geriatrics, is required.
