Duke Nursing Highlights:

  • Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent is required
  • Experience: CMA II - Must have at least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting
  • Certification: Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA is required

The Certified Medical Assistant functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing direct patient care. Performs routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice.

Administrative Duties:

  • Answer telephones
  • Greet patients
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Fulfill insurance requirements
  • Manage correspondence
  • Schedule appointments
  • Arrange hospital admissions
  • Coordinate laboratory services
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping

Clinical Duties:

  • Assist medical and nursing staff in tasks including:
  • Taking medical histories and recording vital signs
  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
  • Patient preparation for examinations and procedures
  • Supporting the physician during examinations and procedures
  • Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
  • Performing basic laboratory tests on site
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies
  • Sterilize medical instruments
  • Promoting patient understanding of educational content and involvement in care planning, documented in patient records
  • Preparing and administering medications as directed by physicians
  • Authorizing medication refills as needed, with prescription transmission to pharmacies
  • Drawing blood samples
  • Patient preparation for x-rays, tests, and procedures
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) administration
  • Suturing/stapling removal
  • Changing sterile and non-sterile dressings
