Recreation Aid

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Support Branch; Fleet Readiness; Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC); Naval Support Activity NAS Whiting Field. The incumbent provides lifeguard duties, safeguards lives, assists with aquatic training, education, and general support at the installation.

• Performs pool and/or waterfront lifeguard responsibilities, supervising swimmers, monitoring activities, applying first aid, enforcing safety rules, and reporting hazards.
• Observes conditions of the assigned area, ensuring a safe environment, removing hazardous materials, and performing rescue work as necessary.
• Conducts and documents pool chemical testing results, checks chlorine and pH levels, and notifies the supervisor of chemical imbalances.
• Documents marine life, water conditions, and weather conditions, and marks swim and surf areas with a flag system.
• Operates rescue vehicles, as needed, and performs general duties, including administering aquatic assessment testing, providing equipment orientations, and checking identification cards.
• Serves as the primary liaison between the activity, security, medical departments, and Aquatics Coordinator during emergency situations.
• Performs cleaning duties, routine facility maintenance, and inspects stands, boards, ropes, safety gear, and dressing rooms to ensure they meet environmental health standards.
• Enforces applicable policies and procedures of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) regarding the use of Aquatic facilities and waterfront operations.

• Specialized experience directly related to the duties described above, with knowledge of pool and waterfront safety rules, beach environment, marine life, and beach and water hazards.
• Knowledge of DoD, DON, and CNIC policies and procedures governing aquatic assessment testing and certifications, and applicable policies and procedures of MWR.
• Ability to identify hazards, provide instruction on water safety, and enforce facility rules and regulations.
• Skilled or proficient in surf lifesaving techniques and radio communications to perform a safe and efficient rescue operation.
• Ability to exercise control over a large group of people and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
• Must be able to work varied work schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be able to work with hazardous and biohazardous materials, including cleaning agents, pool chemicals, and blood.
• Must be able to satisfactorily complete a background investigation and pass an initial and recurrent physical agility test.
• Must be able to complete an ocean run swim run event and a 500-meter swim in less than 10 minutes in a controlled environment.
