Key Responsibilities- Determine the Heat Source and Fire Progression: Investigate fire scenes to identify the heat source, material first ignited, and fire progression.
- Document Fire Scenes: Photograph fire scenes to present as evidence and support investigation findings.
- Identify Burn Patterns: Analyze burn patterns to determine the origin and cause of fires.
- Conduct Witness Interviews: Interview witnesses to gather information and evidence related to fire incidents.
- Collect and Process Physical Evidence: Collect, process, secure, package, and transport physical evidence from fire scenes.
- Determine Fire Origin and Cause: Use evidence and investigation findings to determine the origin and cause of fires.
- Testify as Expert Witness: Provide expert testimony in court to support investigation findings and conclusions.
- Collaborate with Insurance Companies: Work with insurance companies to determine negligence and provide investigation findings.
- Investigate Explosions: Investigate explosions to determine the cause and origin.
- Certification as Fire Investigator: Be certified as a Fire Investigator by a major organization, such as the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) or the Canadian Certification Board of Fire Investigators (CCAI).
- Expert Testimony Experience: Have experience in expert testimony or completion of an appropriate testimony training program.
- Travel and Technology Requirements: Be able to travel, use a multitude of tools, and be proficient in photography and technology.
- Vehicle and Equipment: Own or have access to a vehicle able to carry the needed tools and equipment.
- Education and Experience: Have an Associate of Science in Fire Science or advanced degree, and experience working as a self-directed, independent leader.
- Communication and Problem-Solving Skills: Possess excellent organization, planning, and communication (written and verbal) skills, as well as the ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate solutions.
- Physical Requirements: Be able to perform the physical requirements needed to conduct onsite inspections.
- Computer Skills: Have intermediate computer skills, including proficiency in MS Word/Excel/Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, Email, and Internet Research Tools.
$40 - $85 per hour, depending on experience and availability.
