The Role of Special Education Teacher

Special Education Teachers at Uncommon Schools are passionate about developing and monitoring accommodations for students with special needs. They advocate for students, believing that specialized instruction and related services increase academic achievement. By offering academic, emotional, and physical support while maintaining high expectations, they enable students to thrive academically and personally.

Your Responsibilities

  • Modify, differentiate, and teach an inclusive curriculum that emphasizes diversity.
  • Collaborate with families and Special Education teams to develop 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that offer appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze trends in student work samples and assessments, ensuring compliance with IEPs.
  • Gather academic growth data and write goals to prepare for annual IEP meetings.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and investment in our vision for being an anti-racist organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting students' social-emotional and academic development.
  • Interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities, preferably with 1-2 years of experience.
  • Academic expertise in Special Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields of study.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; preferred qualifications include certification in the state of New York within a reasonable period after beginning employment.
