Position Summary:

The Product Category Strategist will oversee the complete product lifecycle, from market analysis and consumer insights to development and financial planning, ultimately ensuring successful product placement in retail environments.

This position demands a dynamic leader capable of collaborating effectively with diverse teams across multiple locations. A key aspect of this role is to develop a deep understanding of PetWise's manufacturing strengths and work closely with sales leadership to seize both immediate and long-term business prospects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the Merchandising Strategy and Implementation
  • Act as the Retail/Account Specialist: Manage merchandising and assortments for each retailer/account, monitor and analyze IRI/retailer POS data to assess performance metrics such as shelf share, competitive assortments, pricing strategies, and sales velocity.
  • Lead Category Management: Develop and execute private label strategies, and stay informed on category trends and planning, as well as retail and pet industry news.
  • Manage Merchandising Expertise: Oversee retailer assortments and planograms (POGs), end caps, and promotional activities in collaboration with product and sales teams.

· Collaborate with sales teams to identify growth opportunities. Serve as a strategic resource for sales regarding retailer inquiries, ensuring solutions align with brand guidelines, retail segmentation, pricing limitations, and inventory management.

  • Act as a strategic partner for the sales team, leading annual category planning, including private label initiatives and retailer-specific merchandising strategies.
  • Become an expert in category performance analysis, utilizing insights from NIQ, retailer POS data, competitive assessments, and promotional strategies to identify market gaps.
  • Be the primary resource for category trends and retail news within the pet industry.
  • Oversee retailer assortments and planograms (POGs), end caps, and promotional strategies in partnership with product and sales teams.
  • Lead the development of private label strategies and assortments, transitioning successful products to the product manager for go-to-market execution.
  • Serve as the product liaison for finance and operations regarding pricing strategies.

· Facilitate communication between Sales, Product, and Marketing teams to ensure alignment with company objectives.

· Collaborate on KPIs related to retail pricing, promotions, and product placement, tracking and reporting these metrics regularly.

· Identify new product opportunities through trend analysis, customer feedback, and collaboration with sourcing teams, while managing the discontinuation of underperforming items.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional experience.

· Minimum of 5 years in Buying, Merchandising, or Product Development, preferably within the Pet, CPG, or General Merchandise sectors.

· Strong presentation and sales skills with key customers.

· Exceptional organizational abilities, both in physical and digital workspace management.

· Excellent communication skills with an adaptable approach to various personalities.

· Analytical mindset with a focus on financial and market research.

· Commitment to maintaining high ethical standards in a professional setting.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.

· Expertise in consumer product design and detailed specification development.

· Strong understanding of retail mathematics, including margins and pricing structures.

· Willingness to travel as necessary, estimated at 20%.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, and turn.
  • Capability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Proficient in using a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Work primarily in an indoor office environment, with significant time spent at a desk.
