Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Psychiatric Technician to join our team at Waukesha County. As a Psychiatric Technician, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care to our patients in an inpatient mental health setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in-patient psychiatric patients with basic care services and maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Supervise patient behaviors and activities, monitor physical and emotional well-being, and respond to all patient needs and concerns.
  • Record observations regarding patients' behavior, mental status, and care, and report observations to the charge nurse.
  • Provide input for comprehensive treatment plans for patients and assist in restraining physically aggressive patients when necessary.
  • Assist nursing staff with new admissions, including taking vital signs, orienting patients to the unit, and checking patient belongings for contraband items.
  • Provide daily nursing assistance, including monitoring vitals, recording intake and output, and assisting with activities of daily living.
  • Prepare patients for meals, pick up and portion meals, check meals for correctness, assist with feeding as necessary, and clean up following meals.
  • Direct or assist patients with personal hygiene care, including bathing, shaving, and hair care.
  • Transport patients to medical appointments as needed and plan and conduct daily patient educational groups.
  • Supervise visitation activities, including checking in visitors, checking for contraband, and monitoring behavior during visits.
  • Responsible for keeping work areas clean and in order, including disposing of waste properly and washing equipment regularly.
Requirements
  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Two years of recognized post-high school education with at least two courses in psychology, sociology, or social work, or six months of patient care experience in a mental health setting or a residential treatment center for mentally ill or developmentally disabled or related area, or completion of two semesters of clinical education as a nursing student in a recognized nursing education program.
  • Possession of a valid State of Wisconsin CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification.
  • Valid driver's license from the State of Wisconsin.
