Job Summary:

As a Phlebotomist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory function of providing diagnostic information for patient care. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the proper collection and processing of laboratory specimens, while also providing excellent customer service to our members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform order entry, specimen collection, and processing according to established Work Instructions (WI)
  • Clarify clinician orders, obtain pertinent patient information, and accurately identify patients
  • Determine specimen requirements and collect patient samples using appropriate venipuncture or capillary collection methods
  • Assure completeness and accuracy of specimen labeling and enter patient or specimen information into the laboratory computer system
  • Provide good customer service to all members, prioritizing workload according to urgency of request
  • Coordinate activities of the Phlebotomy and Laboratory Service/Technical Assistant workgroups to meet operational service needs
  • Act as a resource for medical or laboratory staff, providing information and facilitating specimen or order problem investigation and resolution
  • Make decisions as required for sample collection and patient processing, using appropriate resources
  • Facilitate communication between Phlebotomists and Laboratory Service/Technical Assistants in problem solving and member assistance
Requirements:
  • Completion of an Accredited Phlebotomy Program or minimum 18 months of phlebotomy experience within the previous 5 years in a multi-patient clinical laboratory
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required
  • Demonstrated customer-focused service skills, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple tasks in a limited time frame
  • Able to produce high-quality work, problem solve, and exercise good judgment
  • Adaptable and able to bend, stoop, reach, and lift a minimum of 10 pounds
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with command of the English language
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, teamwork, and working knowledge of keyboard/data entry
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum 4 years of phlebotomy experience in a multi-patient laboratory setting, including geriatric, pediatrics, inpatient, and/or difficult phlebotomy draws
  • National Phlebotomy certification
  • Thorough understanding of phlebotomy principles and techniques, phlebotomy equipment, and sample collection requirements
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology and written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills, teamwork, and independent work
  • Leadership skills
