Job Title: Registered Dental Hygienist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Registered Dental Hygienist to join our team at Brockton Neighborhood Health Center. As a key member of our dental team, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality oral health care to our patients.

Job Summary:

Under the general and direct supervision of the Dental Director, the Registered Dental Hygienist will provide oral hygiene services to patients, with a focus on prevention of gingival and periodontal disease, as well as the provision of oral health education.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide oral hygiene cleaning services to patients.
  2. Accurately chart periodontal status in EDR for all patients once per year and before all required procedures.
  3. Prepare patients for dental treatment.
  4. Take blood pressure and pulse rates as required.
  5. Maintain a clean and organized treatment area.
  6. Provide patient services as prescribed and allowed by law.
  7. Assist the dental assistant with sterilization and inventory.
  8. Keep instruments sharpened and in working order.
  9. Take, develop, and mount all required x-rays.
  10. Interact with other disciplines within BNHC, providing a resource for medical providers and social workers.
  11. Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  12. Be pleasant, courteous, and considerate of patients, co-workers, and external professional contacts.
  13. Demonstrate ability to prioritize demands, work with distractions, adapt to change, exercise efficient time management, and work independently.
  14. Maintain appropriate chain of command.
  15. Participate in continuing education for personal and professional growth.
  16. Attend required staff meetings.
  17. Communicate effectively with supervisor, staff, and management.
  18. Participate in development of short-range and long-range strategic planning of dental services.
Standards of Care:
  1. Review patient medical history at every visit.
  2. Create excellent and accurate progress notes in EDR.
  3. Complete pain scale every visit.
  4. Complete consent forms and review prior to treatment.
  5. Treatment provided will be billed accurately and appropriately.
  6. Perform duties within the direction of the Massachusetts License Board.
Productivity:
  1. Hygienists are expected to provide a minimum of 1,800 visits per year (based on a 1.0 FTE).
  2. Hygienists are expected to produce a minimum of $25,000 in revenue per month (based on a 1.0 FTE).
Minimum Skills and Knowledge:

Requires certification in dental hygiene procedures with a license to practice in Massachusetts. One year of experience as a practicing dental hygienist. Duties as a dental hygienist require ability to perform according to generally accepted principles independent of supervision.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Works in a busy community health center in a high-crime, urban neighborhood. Interruptions are present and can be disruptive to work flow. Stress is present due to high volume of work, diversified nature of activities, and frequent crises and deadlines. Performs other employee duties to cover staff absences. Works overtime as needed for emergencies or to meet project deadlines.

The individual must be in good health of mind and body with the physical dexterity and vision suitable to accomplish the job duties outlined above. Knowledge of proper patient transfer assistance is also required, and the ability to lift as much as 25 pounds may be necessary. As part of the direct responsibilities, the employee will have direct exposure to toxic chemicals and infectious materials.

Since then, the center has rapidly grown to provide desperately needed services to low-income and marginalized populations in the greater Brockton area. BNHC serves an extremely diverse patient population, including Brazilian, Cape Verdean, Haitian, Latino, Portuguese, African American, and Caucasian, 77% of whom live in poverty.

BNHC is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for patients and staff. As a condition of employment, employees, including new hires, are required to be fully vaccinated, including the most recent COVID-19 booster and annual flu vaccines, with the exception of those who have documented medical or religious exemptions, which must be approved by BNHC according to its protocols. Additional vaccines may be required based on the recommendation of the CDC. New hires who are not yet vaccinated for flu or COVID can arrange to be vaccinated on site.
