We are in search of a motivated and innovative leader to guide a team of public service professionals at the Jerome Park Library. With a significant number of patron visits annually, the Library serves as a vital resource for individuals residing, working, and studying in the evolving Jerome Park area, offering access to a diverse array of literature, information, and educational opportunities. Our dedicated staff organizes over 1,000 programs and classes each year to meet community needs.
The Branch Library Supervisor should be passionate about fostering a collaborative environment that values adaptability and exceptional customer service. The ideal candidate will possess strong management capabilities and a comprehensive understanding of the operational and programmatic aspects of public libraries in urban settings.
Key Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Associate Director:
- Oversee daily operations of the branch, including information services, circulation, outreach, and programming.
- Act as the hiring manager, responsible for staff development, evaluation, training, and disciplinary actions in line with Library policies.
- Ensure the branch's appearance and layout are maintained, manage procurement of furniture and supplies, and oversee the operational budget.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance user experience, utilizing statistics and metrics to tailor services to community needs and boost circulation and attendance.
- Establish partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, elected officials, and leaders to strengthen the branch's ties with its diverse community.
- Collaborate with Programming units to create and facilitate innovative programs for a varied patron base.
- Maintain and update the Library's collection profile, including merchandising materials and communicating collection needs to the Collection Development team.
- Focus on delivering outstanding customer service, rallying the Branch Library team around this goal and addressing patron complaints as necessary.
- Work with the Library Network Manager and other departments to enhance the quality and variety of branch services, ensuring the site is well-maintained and technology is functional.
- Stay informed on public library trends through professional development, participation in professional organizations, and attendance at relevant meetings and workshops.
- Perform related duties as required.
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive public library experience in various roles demonstrating administrative, supervisory, and leadership skills relevant to the position.
- Proven commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality public services.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to serve as an enthusiastic representative of the Library.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, training, and mentoring staff.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess issues, and implement effective solutions.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively across the Library to achieve objectives.
- Creativity, flexibility, and initiative in addressing community and staff needs.
- Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Experience in implementing or enforcing library policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of emerging library technologies and service trends for diverse age groups in urban public libraries.
- Strong proficiency in computer and related technology skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, PCs, Macs, and e-reader devices.
- Responsible for hiring and managing all staff within the branch.
- Oversee the branch's programmatic and supplies budget.
- Monitor personnel budget.
- ALA accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies preferred.
- Experience in creating, conducting, and/or participating in community training, programming, and outreach preferred.
