Silviculture Program Mentor

The Center for Workforce Inclusion is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Silviculture Program Mentor. This position is situated within the Southwest Region 3 Kaibab Nation Forest, specifically designed to support the U.S. Forest Service through the NFS Agriculture Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program. Candidates must be 55 years of age or older and legally authorized to work in the United States. A federal security background check will be a prerequisite for selected candidates.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary focus of this role is to provide expert mentoring and guidance to Foresters and Silviculture Trainees in the execution, planning, and implementation of silvicultural techniques and practices. Additionally, the mentor will play a crucial role in supporting the regional reforestation initiatives.
Specific Duties Include:
- Facilitating all aspects of reforestation, which encompasses cone surveys, collection, site evaluations, preparation, seeding, planting, and monitoring survival rates across the forest and region.
- Assisting Foresters or Silviculture Trainees in conducting on-site assessments to identify areas requiring immediate or long-term cultural interventions to meet management goals.
- Evaluating silviculture prescriptions to ensure alignment with long-term land management strategies.
- Guiding Foresters or Silviculture Trainees in assessing project sites for timber stand enhancement, drafting treatment prescriptions, and managing contracts.
- Providing training and support in stand inventory techniques, including Common Stand Exam protocols and forest sampling methodologies.
- Assisting with the mastery of Forest Service applications such as FVS, FSVeg, and FACTS.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be 55 years of age or older and eligible to work in the United States, with the ability to pass a federal background check. A Bachelor’s degree is required, along with a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience in forestry or a related field. Candidates should possess a comprehensive understanding of forestry land management principles, practices, and concepts necessary for effective silvicultural land management. Familiarity with silvics, dendrology, reforestation strategies, and timber stand improvement techniques is essential. Knowledge of related disciplines such as wildlife management, landscape architecture, plant genetics, hydrology, and soil science is advantageous for developing effective silvicultural prescriptions.
Additionally, candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel, as well as specialized forestry software such as Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), Field Sampled Vegetation (FSVEG), and Forest Service Activity Tracking System (FACTS). The role may involve travel to various forests within the region to support reforestation efforts. Candidates should be comfortable working in diverse terrains and using equipment such as chainsaws.
Work Schedule and Compensation: This is a part-time position, requiring 29 hours of work per week, compensated at a rate of $50.00 per hour.
This position is part of the Older Americans Act of 1965 / Title V COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT initiative, aimed at creating part-time public service and private sector opportunities for unemployed, experienced, and/or low-income individuals aged 55 and older.
